Three different products are sold for "mattress protection" and they are not interchangeable. Buying the wrong one -- or skipping all three -- is a common mistake that costs more than the products would have.
Here is what each one does and when you need it.
Mattress protector: the one you actually need
A mattress protector is a waterproof or water-resistant cover that fits over the mattress like a fitted sheet. Its job is to prevent liquids, allergens, dust mites, and skin cells from reaching the mattress itself. This is the baseline product for any mattress.
The reason a mattress protector matters: most mattress warranties are voided by stains. A mattress that develops a stain from a spill, a sick child, or a pet cannot be warranty-claimed even if the stain has nothing to do with the structural defect. A protector that costs $30 to $80 protects a $600 to $3,000 mattress investment.
Types of mattress protectors:
- Fitted protectors: Stretch over the mattress like a fitted sheet, covering the top and sides. Most common type. Easy to wash. Look for deep-pocket versions if your mattress is over 12 inches tall.
- Zippered encasements: Cover all six sides of the mattress with a zipper closure. Better protection against bed bugs and allergens than a fitted protector. Required if you have diagnosed bed bug risk or significant dust mite allergies.
- Anchor-band protectors: Fit over just the top of the mattress with straps on the corners. Least coverage, least recommended for liquid protection.
What to look for: a waterproof barrier layer (polyurethane or similar) laminated to a breathable fabric. Fully waterproof does not mean hot to sleep on -- modern protectors use membranes that block liquid but breathe well. Avoid protectors with a thick plastic layer that makes noise and traps heat.
Mattress pad: comfort first, light protection second
A mattress pad is a quilted layer that sits between the mattress and the bottom sheet. It adds a small amount of softness and some surface protection, but it is not primarily a protective product -- most mattress pads are not waterproof and will not prevent liquid from reaching the mattress.
A mattress pad is the right choice if your current mattress is firm and you want to add a slight softening layer without buying a new mattress. The softening effect of a pad is modest -- about 1 to 2 inches of extra cushioning. For more significant comfort changes, you need a mattress topper.
If you buy a mattress pad, use a waterproof mattress protector underneath it. The pad does not replace the protector.
Mattress topper: for comfort changes, not protection
A mattress topper is a 2 to 4-inch layer of foam, latex, or fiber that sits on top of the mattress to significantly alter its feel. Toppers are used to:
- Soften a mattress that is too firm
- Add pressure relief to a basic innerspring
- Extend the useful life of a mattress that is still structurally sound but has lost some surface comfort
A mattress topper does not fix a mattress with structural problems -- if the mattress sags or has a broken support zone, a topper over it will sag in the same spot. Toppers address surface comfort, not support.
Memory foam toppers add pressure relief but sleep warm and can feel soft the longer you are on them. Latex toppers provide more consistent support and sleep cooler than memory foam but cost more. Fiber-filled toppers are the softest option and least expensive but compress quickly with regular use.
Layer order with all three products: mattress on the bottom, waterproof protector next (directly on the mattress), then topper, then another protector or mattress pad, then the fitted sheet on top. The waterproof layer should be between the mattress and everything above it.
Do I need all three?
Almost everyone needs a mattress protector. Most people do not need a topper or a pad. The order of need:
- Mattress protector: Yes, for any new mattress. Get this first.
- Mattress topper: Only if the mattress feel needs to change. If you have a new mattress you chose for its feel, a topper undoes that work.
- Mattress pad: Optional comfort layer. Useful for guests or as a light softener. Not a replacement for the protector.
