A kitchen island or kitchen cart adds counter space and storage in a kitchen without requiring a renovation. Carts on wheels can be repositioned and stored away; fixed islands are more substantial but immovable. Standard kitchen counter height is 36 inches; island tops at the same height work as a prep surface; higher top (bar height at 42 inches) makes an island work as a breakfast bar with stools. Make sure there is at least 42 inches of clearance on all sides of the island for traffic and appliance door clearance. We carry kitchen islands and carts in butcher block, wood, and metal finishes.
