A coffee table should be approximately the same height as your sofa cushions and leave at least 18 inches of clearance from the sofa edge so you can sit and stand without navigating around it. Our coffee table collection includes rectangular, round, and oval styles in wood, glass, metal, and mixed materials. Read our guide to choosing a coffee table for sizing rules, shape comparisons, and what to skip.

Coffee tables -- or cocktail tables, as the furniture trade calls them -- anchor the living room seating area. They give seated people a surface for drinks, remotes, and books; they define the conversation zone; and they're often the first piece that shows whether a living room is intentionally arranged or assembled by proximity.

Size: The standard sizing rule is that a coffee table should be roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa it pairs with. For an 84-inch sofa, a coffee table 48 to 60 inches long works well. Going shorter makes the table look like an afterthought; going longer crowds the seating.

Height: The table surface should be within 2 to 4 inches of the sofa seat cushion height -- typically 16 to 18 inches. Lower is more casual (and harder to reach from a seated position); higher is more functional for eating or working from the sofa.

Clearance: Leave at least 18 inches between the table edge and the sofa, and at least 30 to 36 inches on the other sides for walking. A table that requires you to turn sideways to pass becomes a daily friction point.

Shape: Rectangular tables fit most sectionals and linear sofas. Round and oval tables work better in smaller rooms (no sharp corners in traffic paths) and look more casual. Square tables pair well with large sectionals where a longer rectangle would look narrow relative to the seating.

Storage: Coffee tables with drawers, shelves, or ottomans that tuck underneath offer practical storage for remotes, coasters, and throws -- useful in family rooms where the coffee table surface gets heavy use.
