A sideboard (also called a buffet or credenza depending on the context) is a low storage cabinet typically used in dining rooms to store serving pieces, linens, and tableware, with a surface that serves as a staging area when entertaining. They also work in living rooms as a media console or under a TV, and in home offices as lateral filing storage. Standard heights run 30 to 36 inches; standard depths 14 to 18 inches. In a dining room, allow enough clearance to open the drawers and doors fully without blocking the chairs. We carry sideboards in wood and mixed-material finishes.

A sideboard (also called a buffet or credenza) is one of the most versatile pieces in a dining room or living room. In dining rooms, a sideboard holds serving dishes, linens, and bar supplies while providing a surface for food service. In living rooms, sideboards work as media consoles, entry tables, or display surfaces below large artwork or mirrors.

We carry sideboards in 48 to 72-inch widths, with heights of 30 to 36 inches, in traditional, transitional, and modern finishes. Most include a combination of drawers for flatware and table linens, and cabinet storage for larger items.

Sizing and Placement

  • Standard sideboard height (30 to 34 inches) works well as a serving surface -- comfortable for setting dishes without bending
  • In dining rooms, the sideboard should be within a few feet of the table -- close enough to easily move dishes between the two
  • Width is flexible, but a sideboard that's roughly half the width of the dining table it serves creates good visual proportion
  • For media use: measure your components (receiver, cable box, game consoles) to confirm they fit in the cabinet openings before purchasing
