Table lamps are the most versatile lighting option in a bedroom or living room -- they add warmth at seated eye level, are easy to move, and do not require permanent installation. Standard placement is on end tables flanking a sofa or on nightstands flanking a bed. Height matters: the bottom of the lampshade should be roughly at eye level when you are seated, so the shade does not create glare. Dimmable bulbs are worth using in any lamp that serves double duty as reading light and ambient light.
