The entryway is the first room people see and the last room they leave -- and most homes do not give it enough furniture. A bench for sitting while putting on or removing shoes, hooks for coats and bags, and a surface or mirror above are the three elements that make an entryway functional. Hall trees combine all three in a single piece; console tables with a mirror above serve the same purpose with a different aesthetic. In tight entryways under 4 feet wide, a wall-mounted coat rack and a small bench against the wall maximize function without blocking the path.

The entryway is the first and last impression your home makes. It's also a working space: where coats land, where keys get dropped, where shoes pile up, where guests wait while you grab your bag. Furniture that makes it look good has to also handle the daily friction of people moving in and out.

Entry bench: A bench at the entry gives a place to sit while putting on or removing shoes. A bench with underneath storage (cubbies, baskets, or drawer) keeps shoes, bags, and seasonal items contained rather than scattered. The standard entry bench is 42 to 60 inches wide -- choose a length that leaves at least 18 inches of clearance on either side in the entry.

Console table: A narrow console table (12 to 16 inches deep) along the entry wall provides surface for keys, mail, and decorative items without blocking movement. Console table height ranges from 30 to 36 inches -- taller is more dramatic; lower is more accessible. A lamp and a small tray on top establishes the entry's visual tone.

Coat rack or hall tree: A hall tree combines a bench, coat hooks, and sometimes upper shelving into one piece. For smaller entries, it's the most efficient use of limited wall space. Freestanding coat racks are more flexible but require more floor space.

Mirror: An entry mirror serves both function (last look before leaving) and room dynamics (bounces light, makes a narrow entry feel larger). A vertical mirror 24 to 36 inches wide hung at eye level above a console table is a standard and functional combination.
