A buffet is a low storage piece used in dining rooms to hold serving pieces, linens, and tableware; a hutch adds an upper section with glass doors and display shelves above the buffet. Together they are one of the most functional pieces in a formal dining room, providing both accessible surface space for serving and enclosed storage for items you want visible but protected. In smaller dining rooms, a buffet without the hutch top provides storage without adding visual height. Look for adjustable interior shelving to accommodate serving pieces of varying heights.

A hutch combines a buffet or sideboard base with a glass-front or open upper cabinet, giving you closed drawer and door storage below and display shelving above in a single tall piece. In dining rooms, hutches are the most efficient storage option per square foot -- a well-organized hutch holds an entire set of china, serving pieces, bar supplies, and table linens. Heights typically run 72 to 84 inches, widths 48 to 72 inches.

We carry hutches as single pieces and as two-piece configurations (separate buffet base + hutch top), which are easier to move through doorways and stairs during delivery. Finishes range from traditional dark walnut and cherry to transitional white and gray.

Hutch or Sideboard?

  • A sideboard alone is the right choice when ceiling height is limited, when the room is smaller, or when you need serving surface more than display storage
  • A hutch adds display capacity and fills vertical wall space in dining rooms where a low piece would feel underwhelming relative to the room height
  • Glass-front hutch doors let you see and display china without opening the cabinet -- better for formal dining rooms. Open shelving on hutch tops allows easier access but requires more curating to look organized
  • Two-piece hutches (buffet + separate top) are easier to deliver in homes with tight stairwells or low ceiling hallways. The combined weight of a one-piece hutch can also make repositioning difficult
