An upholstered headboard adds softness and a finished look to a bed -- the fabric or leather padding is more comfortable to lean against than a wood or metal headboard, making it a practical upgrade for anyone who reads or watches TV in bed. Panel upholstered headboards are the most common style; tufted headboards add a more formal, traditional look; channel-stitched headboards have a contemporary feel. Height ranges from low (around 40 inches) to floor-to-ceiling statement pieces; a headboard that extends to 52 to 60 inches makes a proportional statement in a standard-ceiling bedroom.
