Wall mirrors serve both function and decoration -- an entry mirror gives you a last look before leaving, a dining room mirror reflects candlelight and expands the perceived space, and a living room mirror above a fireplace or console anchors the focal wall. The center of a wall mirror should hang at 57 to 60 inches from the floor, or within 4 to 8 inches above any furniture beneath it. Read our guide to using mirrors in your home for room-specific placement and sizing guidance.
A wall mirror does double duty in any room -- it reflects light to make a space feel larger and brighter, and it fills vertical wall space with a piece that has both function and presence. In dining rooms, a large wall mirror above a sideboard is one of the most classic and effective design choices. In living rooms, mirrors balance out art-heavy walls or add depth behind a console.
We carry wall mirrors in rectangular, round, oval, and arch shapes, in widths from 18 to 60 inches, with frames in black, gold, silver, bronze, wood, and rattan finishes. Many are suitable for both horizontal and vertical hanging.
Sizing Wall Mirrors
- Above a sideboard or console: The mirror should be roughly 2/3 to 3/4 the width of the piece below it. A 60-inch sideboard works well with a 36 to 45-inch mirror
- Above a fireplace: Measure the mantel and look for a mirror that doesn't extend beyond the mantel edges. Center it, and consider the height -- it should feel substantial but not reach ceiling height
- Solo statement: A large round or arch mirror (36 inches or more in diameter) works as a standalone piece on an otherwise bare wall -- it acts as art and functional mirror simultaneously
- Placement height: Center the mirror at eye level (roughly 57 to 60 inches from floor to mirror center) for stand-alone placement. For mirrors hung above furniture, the bottom of the mirror should be 6 to 8 inches above the furniture surface
