Armoire and Wardrobe: When You Need One, How to Size It, and What to Look For

An armoire is a freestanding cabinet with hanging space inside, typically with a drawer or shelf section below or beside it. In homes with limited closet space -- older houses, guest rooms, apartments -- it functions as a standalone wardrobe. In bedrooms with adequate closets, it can hold out-of-season clothes, linens, or serve as a media cabinet in a living room setting. Understanding which use case you have before you buy makes the sizing decision much easier.

Armoire for Clothing Storage

If the armoire's primary job is clothing storage in a room without a closet, the hanging section is the critical measurement. Standard clothing needs about 40 to 48 inches of horizontal hanging rod space per person for a basic wardrobe. A double-door armoire typically provides 38 to 48 inches of rod space, which works for one person with a moderate wardrobe but gets tight with a larger one.

Hanging rod height matters too. Most armoires allow about 54 to 60 inches of vertical hanging space from rod to floor, which accommodates dresses and long coats. If the user primarily hangs suits, shirts, and folded pants, a shorter rod with a shelf beneath is more space-efficient. Look for armoires with adjustable or removable shelves so the interior can be reconfigured for the actual wardrobe.

Exterior Dimensions and Room Fit

Armoires are tall pieces -- typically 70 to 84 inches tall and 40 to 52 inches wide. They have significant visual weight and take up a full wall section. Before you buy, measure the wall you intend to place it against and check ceiling height. An 80-inch armoire in a room with an 8-foot (96-inch) ceiling is fine. The same armoire in a room with a dropped ceiling at 84 inches means you have 4 inches of clearance -- check the door swings do not contact the ceiling when opened.

Depth typically runs 20 to 24 inches. This is a real footprint. In a smaller bedroom, an armoire adds significant depth to one wall. In a room where the armoire is against a wall opposite the bed, check that there is enough floor space to walk between it and the foot of the bed -- 24 inches minimum, 36 inches for comfortable passage.

Armoire in the Living Room as a Media Cabinet

Armoires work well as media cabinets -- their wide doors hide the TV or entertainment equipment when not in use, and the interior can be configured with shelving for components. This was a popular setup before flat-screen TVs and remains functional for many people who want to be able to close off the media center completely. If this is the use case, check that the armoire's interior depth accommodates the TV plus mount depth, and that ventilation for electronic equipment is possible with the doors closed or there are ventilation options in the back panel.

Armoire vs. Chest vs. Dresser

If the main need is folded clothing storage -- shirts, jeans, sweaters, underwear -- a dresser or chest provides more organized, accessible drawers without the visual bulk of an armoire. An armoire is the right choice when hanging space is the primary need, when there is a desire to completely enclose the wardrobe behind doors, or when the piece needs to serve multiple storage functions in one unit.
