Getting the Replacement Right

A water heater is rarely a planned purchase, so this is usually a fast decision. Three things decide it:

  • Fuel type. Match what you have. Gas to gas, electric to electric. Converting is a plumbing and electrical job, not an appliance swap
  • Gallons. Replacing like for like is the safe default. 40 gallon suits most families, 50 if you have a large tub or several people showering back to back
  • Space. Check the height and diameter of the old unit and the clearance around it, especially in a closet or attic
