What is an accent table?

An accent table is a small occasional table used alongside seating for surface space -- holding a lamp, drink, book, or remote. The category includes end tables, side tables, chairside tables, C-tables (which slide over the arm of a sofa), nesting tables, and small pedestal tables. The defining characteristic is that they are secondary to the main furniture arrangement and are scaled to work alongside a sofa, chair, or bed rather than as a standalone centerpiece.

What height should an accent or end table be?

An accent table used next to a sofa or chair should be at or slightly below the arm height of the furniture it sits next to -- typically 24 to 28 inches. This places the table surface at a comfortable height for setting a drink down or reaching a lamp. A table significantly shorter than the sofa arm looks undersized and requires bending to reach it. A table taller than the arm creates an awkward visual interruption in the room.

How many accent tables do I need in a living room?

At minimum, one end table on each end of the sofa provides surface for lamps and drinks. An additional side table between an accent chair and the sofa is practical if the chair is in regular use. Beyond that, more tables add clutter without proportional function. A common configuration is two end tables flanking a sofa and one side table next to the accent chair -- three tables total. If the sofa is a sectional, one end table at the main seating end is typical.
