Chest or Upright

  • Chest freezers. More usable space per dollar, better temperature stability, and they hold cold far longer if the power goes out. The tradeoff is digging to reach the bottom
  • Upright freezers. Shelves and door bins make everything visible and reachable, and they take up less floor area. Slightly higher running cost

Before You Buy

  • Where it is going. If it lives in an unconditioned garage, confirm the model is rated for garage temperatures. Many are not, and a freezer in a hot garage can stop cycling correctly
  • Manual or auto defrost. Auto defrost is less work, manual defrost holds temperature better and usually costs less to run
  • Door clearance and lid swing. A chest freezer lid needs vertical room, which shelving above it can block
