  • Top mount. The freezer on top layout, the most space efficient per dollar and the easiest fit in older kitchens
  • Side by side. Narrow doors that need less clearance to swing, good for galley kitchens and islands set close
  • French door. Wide fresh food space at eye level with the freezer below, the most popular layout in new kitchens
  • Bottom mount. A single fresh food door with a freezer drawer underneath

Measure Before You Buy

More refrigerator returns come from measuring than from anything mechanical. Three numbers matter:

  • Width of the opening. Leave clearance on each side for air, not a tight fit
  • Depth with the door open. A standard depth unit sticks out past the counter, and counter depth trades interior space for a flush look
  • The path in. Front door, hallway turns, and the kitchen entry. A 36 inch refrigerator does not fit through a 32 inch doorway
