What is the difference between a platform bed and a panel bed?

A platform bed has a solid base or slatted platform that supports the mattress without a box spring. The platform itself is the foundation. A panel bed uses a traditional frame with decorative headboard and footboard panels and requires a box spring or foundation beneath the mattress. Platform beds sit lower to the ground (typically 12 to 14 inches of total bed height) while panel beds with a box spring sit higher, around 24 to 25 inches total.

What size bed frame do I need for a queen mattress?

A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches. The bed frame for a queen should be sized to match -- most queen frames have interior rails at 60 by 80 inches. The overall exterior dimensions of the bed, including the headboard and footboard, will be larger. A typical queen panel bed is 66 to 70 inches wide overall and about 86 to 90 inches from head to foot. Measure your room to confirm you have enough clearance on each side.

Does a platform bed require a box spring?

No. A platform bed is designed to support the mattress directly without a box spring. Most memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses actually perform better on a solid or slatted platform than on a box spring. If you choose a slatted platform, the slats should be no more than 3 inches apart to prevent sagging, especially with softer foam mattresses. Using a box spring on a platform bed raises the total bed height more than intended and is generally not recommended.
