Choosing the Right Bookcase

  • Height: 72-inch bookcases make strong vertical statements and maximize storage, but require wall anchoring for safety in homes with children. 48-inch units work well in spaces where height would feel overwhelming -- behind a sofa, flanking a TV, or in hallways
  • Fixed vs adjustable shelves: Adjustable shelves let you reconfigure for large art books, records, or display items. Fixed shelves are generally sturdier for heavy loads
  • Depth: Standard bookcase shelves are 10 to 12 inches deep, which fits trade paperbacks and most hardcovers. If you plan to store oversized books or binders, look for 14-inch depth options
  • Back panel: Bookcases with solid back panels (vs. no back) look better in open-room placement and prevent items from falling behind shelves
