Sofa Tables
A sofa table -- also called a console table -- is a narrow, tall surface designed for placement along the back of a sofa when the sofa is not pushed against a wall. The table height should match or be just slightly taller than the sofa back, typically 34 to 40 inches. Depth is kept shallow -- usually 12 to 16 inches -- so it does not extend far beyond the sofa footprint. Read our guide to end tables and side tables for how console and sofa tables work in a full living room arrangement.
A sofa table (sometimes called a console table) positioned behind a sofa turns the dead space between the sofa back and a walkway into a functional surface. They're typically narrow -- 10 to 15 inches deep -- so they don't intrude on traffic flow, but they add useful height, lamps, plants, and storage to otherwise empty floor space.
We carry sofa tables in 48 to 72-inch widths, 29 to 34-inch heights, in metal, wood, and mixed-material finishes. Many include lower shelving for decorative objects or baskets.
When a Sofa Table Makes Sense
- When the sofa floats in the middle of a room rather than sitting against a wall -- the sofa table defines the back edge and keeps the room from feeling unanchored
- When a room needs a lamp but there's no wall space behind the sofa -- a sofa table lamp fills the gap
- In open-plan spaces, a sofa table behind the sofa acts as a divider between living and dining zones without blocking sightlines
- In entryways: a narrow console at entry height (30 to 34 inches) handles keys, mail, and landing-zone storage better than most purpose-built entry furniture
