How much can a storage ottoman hold?

The interior storage capacity of most standard ottoman storage benches or cubes is 1 to 3 cubic feet, depending on the size. A 36x18x18-inch ottoman has roughly 2 cubic feet of interior space -- enough for 4 to 6 throw blankets, or a mix of blankets, toys, and remotes. Larger storage ottomans (48x24 inches) hold more but require more floor space. The lid needs to be propped or removed to access storage, so placement matters -- make sure the lid has room to open fully.

Can a storage ottoman work as a coffee table?

Yes, and this is one of the most practical uses for a storage ottoman. A firm storage ottoman with a tray on top functions as a coffee table -- the tray stabilizes drinks and items. The ottoman provides storage underneath, extra seating when guests arrive, and a soft surface that is safer around children than a glass or wood-edge coffee table. The tradeoff is that the tray needs to be moved to access storage. Choose a storage ottoman with a firm enough lid that it does not sag in the middle under normal use.

What size storage ottoman works as a coffee table?

A storage ottoman used as a coffee table should follow the same sizing rules as a standard coffee table: roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa, positioned 15 to 18 inches from the front edge of the sofa. For a standard 90-inch sofa, a 36 to 48-inch storage ottoman works well. A square 36x36-inch or rectangular 48x24-inch ottoman are common sizes for this use. The height should match the sofa seat height (17 to 19 inches) so it looks proportional and serves as usable seating when needed.
