A bed frame is the structural foundation of the bedroom. Platform, panel, and storage configurations each have different requirements for box springs, mattress thickness, and room clearance. Read our guide to bed frame types to understand which configuration fits your room and your setup before you shop.

A bed frame supports the mattress and box spring (or mattress alone, for platform-style frames). The right bed frame depends on your mattress type, the look you want, and whether you need under-bed storage.

Platform frames have a solid or slatted base that supports the mattress directly -- no box spring needed. They sit lower to the ground (typically 7 to 12 inches of clearance) and have a cleaner, more modern profile. Most memory foam and hybrid mattresses are designed to work on a platform base.

Traditional frames with center support hold a box spring plus mattress. They typically sit higher -- 18 to 24 inches of mattress height above the floor -- and suit traditional or transitional bedroom styles. The box spring adds height and can extend mattress life by absorbing impact.

Adjustable base frames allow the head and foot of the mattress to be raised independently, which is useful for reading, reducing snoring, or managing lower back discomfort. These require a compatible split-base mattress for king sizes.

Storage frames include built-in drawers below the sleeping surface -- useful in smaller bedrooms where a separate dresser takes up too much floor space. Drawer depth varies significantly; measure before you assume what will fit.
