A canopy bed has four posts extending from the corners of the frame up to a top rail that forms a rectangular frame above the bed. The canopy frame can be left bare for a modern architectural look, draped with fabric for a romantic or traditional feel, or fitted with a mosquito net for outdoor-adjacent bedrooms. Ceiling height is the critical constraint: most canopy beds stand 80 to 90 inches tall, so ceilings below 9 feet can feel tight. Metal canopy beds have a lighter, more modern silhouette; wood canopy beds are heavier and warmer-looking. We carry canopy beds in queen and king sizes.

A canopy bed is the most architecturally significant piece of furniture you can put in a bedroom. The four posts and overhead frame -- whether draped with fabric, left as a modern open silhouette, or fitted with sheer panels -- transform a bed from a functional sleep surface into the visual anchor of the room.

Ceiling height matters. Traditional canopy beds typically stand 7 to 8 feet tall at the top frame. Most modern homes have 8-foot ceilings, which leaves minimal clearance for drapery or panel attachments. Before choosing a canopy bed, measure the ceiling height and check the overall bed height in the product specs. Low-profile canopy frames (sometimes marketed as panel beds with posts) work better in standard 8-foot ceilings.

Style directions: Traditional four-poster canopy beds use turned wood posts and an elaborate crown frame -- they work in classically decorated master bedrooms. Modern canopy beds use straight metal or wood posts with a simple rectangular frame -- they fit contemporary and transitional rooms. Upholstered canopy beds combine fabric headboards and side panels with the post-and-frame structure for a softer, more luxurious look.

Fabric and drapery: Most canopy beds are sold without fabric -- the frame is the piece, and drapery is optional. Sheer panels hung from the frame create enclosure and atmosphere; leaving the frame undraped creates a more graphic, modern effect. Fabric panels sold separately at fabric stores can be customized to any room's color scheme.

Sizing: Canopy beds are available in twin, full, queen, and king sizes like standard bed frames. The footprint of the frame is slightly larger than the mattress size -- check the exterior post dimensions against your room's available space. Canopy beds need clearance not just for the bed but for the visual presence of the overhead frame.
