A credenza is a low, long storage cabinet -- typically 60 to 80 inches wide -- used in dining rooms, living rooms, and home offices. When a hutch (an upper cabinet with glass doors and open shelves) is added on top, the combined piece is called a hutch-and-credenza or buffet-with-hutch. The credenza base provides closed storage for dining linens, serving pieces, and files; the hutch displays china, glassware, or books while keeping them accessible. They work best against a full wall with ceiling height clearance for the hutch section.

A credenza is a long, low cabinet -- typically 60 to 80 inches wide and 30 to 34 inches tall -- originally used in home offices and executive offices for additional work surface and filing storage. In modern homes, credenzas work equally well in living rooms as media consoles, in dining rooms as serving sideboards, and in home offices as lateral file and equipment storage.

The defining feature is the combination of horizontal length and low profile. Where a bookcase fills vertical space, a credenza extends horizontally along a wall, providing a long surface for display and a run of cabinet storage below.

Credenza Uses

  • Media console: The long, low credenza profile is ideal for TV stands -- it provides width to balance large flat-screen TVs, cabinet space for AV equipment, and a clean horizontal line that works in contemporary and mid-century settings
  • Home office storage: Credenzas with file drawers provide lateral filing for documents alongside drawer and cabinet storage for office supplies -- replacing both a filing cabinet and a separate storage unit
  • Dining room serving: Used in dining rooms the same way as a sideboard, with the advantage of more total horizontal surface area for serving dishes
  • Hallway display: A narrow credenza (12 to 16 inches deep) against a hallway wall provides surface for display, lamps, and seasonal decor without blocking the hallway
