A lounge chair is an accent or occasional chair designed for relaxing rather than upright sitting -- typically wider than a standard chair, with a lower seat and deeper cushion. They work well in bedrooms, reading nooks, and living rooms as a complement to a sofa. Club chairs, barrel chairs, and oversized accent chairs all fall in this category. Seat depth matters: a lounge chair that is too shallow for your frame will not feel comfortable for extended reading or relaxing; test the seat depth in person before buying. What Makes a Good Lounge Chair

  • Seat depth: A lounge chair should have a seat deep enough to tuck your legs up or stretch out. 24 to 28 inches is the range where most adults can sit truly comfortably
  • Back height and angle: Lounge chairs angle slightly back -- not as far as a recliner, but enough to naturally support a resting position. Look for a back angle between 100 and 110 degrees
  • Pairing: A lounge chair almost always works better with an ottoman -- it completes the ergonomic position and makes the chair more versatile. Consider purchasing as a set if the model offers it
  • Room proportion: Lounge chairs are wider than accent chairs (typically 30 to 36 inches vs 24 to 28 inches). In a small room, one well-chosen lounge chair can fill the seating role that a second sofa would occupy in a larger space
