What is the difference between memory foam and regular foam?

Memory foam is a viscoelastic polyurethane foam that responds to heat and pressure, conforming to the body shape and returning slowly when pressure is removed. Regular polyurethane foam is more resilient -- it compresses and springs back quickly. Memory foam provides more pressure point relief and motion isolation than standard foam, which is why it became popular for couples where one partner moves during sleep. The tradeoff is heat retention -- memory foam absorbs and holds body heat, which can cause sleeping warm. Gel-infused and open-cell memory foam formulas address this.

Is memory foam good for back pain?

Memory foam's pressure-relieving properties can help with certain types of back pain, particularly where pressure point relief at the hips and shoulders is the primary issue. For back pain caused by insufficient support (the mattress sinking too much in the middle), a firmer memory foam or a hybrid with a firmer core is better than a soft all-foam mattress. People with back pain generally do better with medium-firm to firm mattresses that keep the spine aligned rather than allowing the heaviest body parts to sink too deeply.

How long does a memory foam mattress last?

A quality memory foam mattress from a reputable manufacturer lasts 7 to 10 years. The sign it needs replacing is visible permanent body impressions or a loss of support that causes you to wake up stiff. Memory foam density is the primary longevity indicator -- higher density foam (4 lbs per cubic foot or more) holds its structure longer than lower density foam (under 3 lbs per cubic foot). Budget memory foam mattresses often use lower density foam to hit a price point, which is why they wear out in 3 to 5 years.
