How does a power lift recliner work?

A power lift recliner has a motorized base that tilts the entire chair forward, gently rising from the base to assist the occupant from sitting to a near-standing position. A separate motor controls the reclining function independently. The chair operates with a hand controller that lets the user choose any combination of lift position and recline angle. The lift function activates when returning to upright from reclined position, or can be used independently from a neutral sitting position when the user wants help standing.

Is a lift chair covered by Medicare?

Medicare Part B may cover the seat lift mechanism (not the entire chair) for people who have a documented medical need. The lift mechanism must be prescribed by a physician, and the patient must have a medical condition that makes sitting and standing significantly difficult without assistance. Coverage is typically partial. Contact Medicare directly or speak with a physician about whether you qualify -- the process involves prior authorization and must use a Medicare-approved supplier.

What position options do power lift recliners come in?

Power lift recliners are available in 2-position (sitting and partial recline), 3-position (sitting, partial recline, and full recline), and infinite-position configurations. Infinite-position chairs allow the back and footrest to be adjusted independently to any angle, which is valuable for people who need to elevate legs for circulation while the back remains upright, or who want to sleep in the chair overnight at a specific angle. For overnight sleeping, a 3-position or infinite-position chair is needed; 2-position chairs only recline partially.
