A reclining loveseat provides the comfort of a recliner in a two-seat format -- each seat reclines independently, so two people can watch a movie without negotiating the recliner timing. They are a good choice for smaller living rooms where a full reclining sofa would dominate the space, or as a secondary seating piece alongside a larger sofa. Like reclining sofas, they need clearance behind the back when reclined -- standard recliners need 6 to 12 inches; wall-hugger mechanisms reduce this to 4 to 6 inches. A reclining loveseat provides the same comfort as a reclining sofa in a smaller footprint -- typically 62 to 76 inches wide with two reclining seats. It's the right choice when a full sofa would be too long for the room, when you want to pair a loveseat with an existing sofa, or when the reclining function matters but space is tight.

  • A reclining loveseat seats two adults comfortably. If you regularly have three or more people in the room, a sofa is the better choice
  • Width when reclined: a two-seat reclining loveseat extends 24 to 30 inches in front of its current position. Plan for this clearance in front of the piece
  • Many reclining loveseat models include a center console with storage, cup holders, and sometimes USB charging ports between the two seats -- a useful feature for permanent living room placement
